I studied art at the City of Birmingham College in 1969 where I undertook a two year course in painting, printing and sculpture (achieving a credit) whilst training as a teacher (Cert Ed) and going on to complete a BEd degree (Birmingham University). Achieving a MEd in 1985 and a PhD in 2006 (Birmingham University).
At school I had studied art to Advanced level appreciating the Impressionists’ use of light, colour and use of paint but was more inspired at college by the boldness of the Pop Art movement and the artists Blake, Hamilton, Warhol and Liechtenstein. I continued to scribble but my return to painting and printing was inspired, from 2012, by visits to exhibitions at the RA, Tate Modern and Courtaulds Institute with a friend who encouraged me by giving me a sketch book and a RA Friends membership.
Revisiting long lost skills in painting through membership of the Avoncroft Arts Society in 2015 and attending courses on painting, life drawing and printing led by the artist Louise Blakeway at the Art Yard in Cradley Heath. I have subsequently attended courses by artists Jo Pardoe and Richard Crabtree at Avoncroft. I am continuing to experiment with colour, form, shape, tone and line using acrylic, graphite, pastels, mono printing, transfer prints and lino cuts.
My work has been exhibited at Avoncroft, the Art Yard and the Cradley Heath Arts Festival.
